shelter makeover

Last night on my local news I saw how two high schoolers were trying to get the word out about this shelter makeover competition. Our local shelter REALLY needs a makover. It’s pretty pitiful.

I know it’s annoying, but if anyone who reads this can register with the website and put the Central Missouri Humane Society (zip code: 65201) as their affiliated shelter, I would really appreciate it. The standing for my shelter has moved from 850 or so to 32 (as of last listing) and I would really, really like to see this happen. I got both my animals from this shelter and while, of course, any shelter getting help is good, ours is desperately in need this year.

I added a link to this site to my list to make this easier.

adventures in the park

I don’t have any pictures, yet, of all the dogs in the park but I keep meaning to take a camera.

I’m beginning to take Lou and Ella with me to the park in the afternoons, with Aggie. I’ve been hesitant to do it because Ella’s been known not to listen, yet I don’t want to leave her at home by herself. But things have changed recently and she’s been listening.

They both bark like crazy at any thing, but Ella’s not nearly as scared as she was. In fact she runs around at top speed chasing both Lou and Aggie. She’ll jump into bushes or tall grass without a thought. Lou is less likely to leave the main trail, though he will follow either of the girls a short ways. Often he watches from the safety of the trail. Both little dogs come running back to check on me regularly so I’m not worried about them.

They are learning how to socialize with other dogs in the park. They see that neither Aggie or I are scared, and since they haven’t been hurt their confidence is growing. Sometimes I’ll hold one or the other for someone to pet and they’re getting a little better about that as well, though they would prefer not to have a stranger that close.

As Ella gets more confident, she gets closer to the other dogs. The other day a big black lab-mix came running up, so Ella ran behind me. As soon as the lab passed, Ella ran after her – barking, of course. She ran right up behind the lab and into her back legs, going so far to nip them. The lab was completely oblivious. She didn’t even look at Ella, but kept her eyes to the trees where Aggie was. It was so funny!

The running is making a difference; at least, I think so. I’ll have to check with Andrew if he notices anything. After all they’re his dogs, he knows them better than I do.

Risa’s afghan

I’m working on a HUGE blanket for my siser-in-law. Whenever I sit down in front of the tv – so not every day, and tonight is a tv night! – I crochet. Tuesday is NCIS and The Mentalist night. So I’ll be busy crocheting my fingers off. It’s good, because I have plenty of yarn to use up.

risas-blanket1 I hope to get it too her soon. It’s cold in Philly. I’m over halfway done, but I still have to add two more stripes to match the black/grey ones here. It’s a very tight weave and will be VERY warm.

Jenner’s been spending a lot of days on the chair, or in his bed (which happens to be on another chair). He stays off the floor for fear of being overrun by puppies. Lou wants to love on him, but I think Ella would prefer to chase him.

Last night Andrew took the pups to the lab and Jenner enjoyed some play time on the floor. Actually, he kinda went crazy. I need to buy him some new toys and a safer for-pets laser. Lou has stolen and destroyed most of Jenner’s toys – not that they weren’t well on their way; actually they were pretty sad. And I think that Jenner may have gotten a laser in the eye last December which made his eyes water terribly. I immediately stopped using that laser and keep meaning to buy a safer one, maybe a green one. He enjoys chasing the light on occasion.

j-show-me-some-pawAs the days get warmer he’ll probably spend a bit more time outside, but I miss him already. We didn’t get a lot of cuddle time this winter. It hasn’t been cold enough.

It has been entertaining watch him strategize to keep away from the dogs. He waits until they aren’t paying attention to go for the door. And uses the space behind the sofa for safe passage across the living room. Sometimes the dogs see him and go to wait on the other end to see if he’ll come out. Then Andrew and I have to draw them away to give him a chance to reach safety.

I’ve been looking for new bedding since I bought a new mattress and one of the websites I was directed to had this really interesting “History of Quilts”. I had no idea that the beautiful quilts we think of as made by church women’s groups and the Amish probably were brought to Europe from the Mid. East during the Crusades (it’s amazing how many things we actually recognize, came to Europe by that route). coloradologcabin

Anyway, I thought I would supply the link and some pics of my favorites.
